When I was very young, I enjoyed painting hundreds of Citadel figures. I would enter these into town, county and state competitions, and it felt awesome as an 11 year old to win against adults. I loved the detail and expressions on these figures, and would pour all my effort and pride into little ½" metal figurines.
Years later, I persued a degree in illustration. I love painting, illustration, drawing, design...all fine art.Several years ago, I took a job with McFarlane Toys, creators of Spawn and other successful lines. I painted and sculpted figures daily, loved it and actually made a living...doing something I love. After some times, I left the company to finish my degree.
Recently there's been an uproar of popularity in the world of Transformers. Mainly due to the blockbuster movie this summer. As a huge transformers fan for over 20 years.... I've taken more interest in the action figures recently released. These figures even out of the box are works of art. The designers, engineers, and sculptors at Hasbro did an excellent job designing and sculpting the Transformer's movie line of toys.Inspired by these other artists, repainters, kitbashers - I quickly got my ass to a great hobby shop here in San Diego, and bought an array of supplies to mark my own mark on the scene. I attend to EVERY detail on these Transformers...there's so much, but it pays off in the finished product.
My procedure is simple and standard. I start by cleaning the original figure, removing any debris or oil from the factory. Usually I will lightly coat the entire figure in a primer, to ensure the paint will never chip or flake off. I've devised many tricks and tips for the painting process. Usually I will apply anywhere from 3 to 10 different shades or coats of paints on an area in order to achieve the finished product I am happy with. Unlike most other customizers, I religiously use enamel paints. They provide a more professional finish, high resistance to chiping/scratching...and most importantly, enamel paints are notorious for staying colorfast (pigments in paint won't fade over time like Acrylics) Enamel paints are commonly used for paint jobs like flooring, cars, models, etc. In other words, the paint takes a beating very well, which is important when considering these toys will be handled and transformed.
